Are You Great At What You Do?
Think of all the great people you’ve worked with in the past, is there anybody that stands out as being head and shoulders above the rest in regards?
Think of all the different people you’ve hired for different jobs - mowing the lawn, cleaning the house, fixing the plumbing, repairing your car, making your business cards, taking pictures at a special event - what qualities stood out as being great?
If you want to build a great business, then you first need create a definition for “great.”
Sure, Dictionary.com defines the term as meaning “notable; remarkable; exceptionally outstanding”, but what do YOU think it means when it comes to business? What characteristics really stand out?
Here are some of the things I notice when it comes to great work:
Prompt: The person shows up when they’re supposed to show up and leaves when they’re supposed to leave. I don’t like my time being wasted when I’m paying somebody else to do something for me. Sadly, it happens all to often…making my simple expectations become great.
Organized: I have a tough time keeping everything organized sometimes and expect others to be the same. But when somebody seems organized and with it, they really stick out in my mind.
Honest: Not everybody provides honest work out there. Some people are looking to get more than they give, so they add in half an hour of work here and half an hour there. While they might get away with it a couple times, their overall mindset catches up to them and they’re out the door, never to be hired by me again. Be honest, it pays!
Dedicated: I understand that problems can occur in any job, but it’s how somebody handles these problems decides whether they are great or not. I’ll always respect somebody that stays overtime to fix something that went wrong, even if it’s not expected of them.
High-Value: If you over-deliver on value, then you’ll always be welcomed back for more work…and I’ll tell others. You’ll make more money in the end based on referrals and your customers will be happy based on the value you provide.
There are a number of other things that can make a worker great, but by applying these simple values in your life you’ll be more successful in business and much happier with your long-term results.
