Writer’s Block

So you’re sitting in front of your computer and you’re not sure what to write about, but your deadline is quickly approaching. What do you do? Here are three tips that should help you generate ideas so that you can overcome writer’s block:

  • Brainstorm: Instead of trying to write cohesive sentences or paragraphs, just try to generate some ideas. Throw your thoughts out on paper and worry about sorting them out later. By getting ideas on paper, you’ll quickly be able to figure out how to piece them together into an article.
  • Read Something Else: Instead of worrying about your article, read something else for a bit. I recommend the daily paper. By simply letting your mind read other creative work, you’ll most likely start to think creatively as well. You’ll generate ideas of your own by pulling little pieces out of other articles and stories.
  • Take a Break: I don’t recommend leaving your article for five hours, but if you can’t generate any ideas - then you should take a break. Go for a run, have a bite to eat, or simply take a 20-minute nap. Stress is a major contributor to writer’s block - by removing the stress, you’ll most likely open up your mind to a world of new thoughts and ideas.

    Dan,
